Sowing and Deploying Technology for a Smart Agriculture

Why TAPIOCA Lab?

TAPIOCA stands for “Tecnologias Aplicadas às Ciências Agrárias” or Technologies Applied to Agricultural Sciences. Tapioca is derived from the word tipi’óka, its name in the Tupí language spoken by natives when the Portuguese first arrived in the Northeast Region of Brazil around 1707. This Tupí word refers to the process by which the cassava starch is made edible.

What we do?

  • Encourage the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the agricultural, forest and farming sciences and its sectors, covering the entire production cycle;
  • Foster the networking of people and infrastructures within EAJ campus and beyond for basic and applied research
  • Application of technology to optimize and support the teaching-learning process, exchanging activities at technical, undergraduate and graduate levels

Strict collaboration with several research labs and areas throughout the campus (1,283 ha), such as dairy, aquaculture, seeds, entomology (pollinizers, pest management control), plant and animal welfare, forestry, open field and protected cultivation.

Installations and lab-cooperation: multi-actor approach for smart farming.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

workstations and computational infrastructure to model, simulate, design and develop software for different platforms, such as mobile, web, desktop

seed analysis

seed analysis and research lab contributes with the evaluation of developed software and digital image processing tools

embedded systems

electronics lab supports digital and analogic circuit prototypes, IoT devices and hardware/software co-design on SCB, FPGA, DSP and uC

PRODUCTION NODES

both plant and animal production nodes throughout campus provide data, installations and info exchange, demanding ICT solutions for actual problems
