RESEARCH AREAS

IOT AND
DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS

A smart and digital agriculture demands realible data within a distributed sensing network. Low energy devices, security, suitable middleware, protocols and data storage are key issues under agriculture 4.0. Besides, energy harvesting from renewable sources and tackle connection unavailability in open air fields are of practical interest.

MODELLING, SIMULATION AND
EMBEDDED CONTROL

Modelling of biological and environmental dynamic systems is a difficult task. Getting such optimized models, simulate and develop embedded systems for on-site application is part of our mission. Common process variables to control are temperature, humidity, water or fertilizer levels, nutrient concentration, lighting, energy etc.

Computational intelligence and data science

The more data you have, the more smart may be your decision. Computational intelligence (or Artificial Intelligence AI) refers to using methods based on intelligent behavior observed in nature to solve problems that are not easily solved by traditional programs.

Digital
image
processing

“An image tells more than 1,000 words”. This known quote demands feasible digital processing algorithms with a sound background theory. Classification, counting and identification are common demands for agricultural sciences. Pests and damage estimation, physical properties, yield prediction based on images can reduce lab time and provide qualitative and quantitative results, often combined with AI techniques.

Our Projects

PROPESQ-PPG UFRN

Computacional decision support system for integrated management of carmine mealybug and scale mealybug on forage palm (cactus)

SmartSilo

PROPESQ-PPG UFRN

Integrated monitoring and control of internal temperature of storage silo (grains).

Cognitive Testing

System for cognitive testing automation in Horses that allows the configuration of these tests and the data acquisition for later analysis, in order to correlate the horse’s intelligence to its race, age, sex or behavior.

Pomodoro

PROPESQ-UFRN

Development of an irrigation system based on the intelligent monitoring of soil moisture in a tomato crop, through capacitive sensors and data fusion with fuzzy logic.
